Church of the Franciscan Friar and the Cloister

If the imposing Romanic Collegiate Church illustrates the concept of Jerusalem, the City in the Sky, the Parish Church of San Michele offers the clearest evidence of Baroque inspiration, the Chapel of the Holy Sepulchre testifies to popular devotion for the suffering and death of Christ, the Church of the Franciscan Friars is characterised instead by reduction of the Biblical message to the essence.
Thanks to the simplicity and sobriety of their constructive lines the churches raised by the Franciscan and Capuchin Orders during the Counter-Reformation differ clearly from the elaborate Collegiate Churches so rich in art and culture. The Convent Church consecrated in 1697 by the Prince Bishop of Bressanone was designed by the Franciscan Friar Vitus Rastpichler of Ötztal. The Order's ideal of simplicity and poverty is reflected in the absence of a lofty bell tower and complex vaults and frescoes. After the entrance stands the small Chapel of Saint Anthony annexed to the nave destined for solitary meditation. The Fathers originally recited the choral prayer of the women's gallery. Not much of what distinguished the initial version of the church remains to be seen today, with the exception of the large oil paintings behind the lateral altars and the Franciscan saints featured on the southern wall. The altars we see today are all graceful examples of Rococo style. The scrupulous restoration work performed between 1992 and 1994 provided closer resemblance to the Convent's original form. The restoration project was awarded the Europa Nostra Prize in June, 1994.
