San Candido – Innichen: the thermal baths of LITTAMUM

The excavations conducted at San Candido in the area of the Lullerhof farm and the hospital between 1981 and 1984, supplemented by more recent work in the garden of the Hotel Villa Stefania , have led to a greater understanding of the settlement of LITTAMUM, which began life as a mansio along the via per compendium linking the area north of the Alps to Aquileia.
The excavation uncovered the foundations of structures belonging to a hypocaust building and a system of water channels and tanks.
The main structure, which must have originally covered some 200 sqm, has been identified as the settlement’s principal bath house. The building must have remained in use for a long period from the start of the second century to the middle of the fourth century , when it was completely destroyed.
On its site a “Blockhaus” type of structure was built, which was in turn destroyed around the start of the fifth century AD.
This site is of particular importance for the evidence it has provided regarding the organization of the Roman road network in this part of the alps, and the flow of trade passing through it. In particular it is worth noting the presence in San Candido of a high percentage of African sigillata pottery, demonstrating the vitality of trade during the Late Antique period, when the Roman road system was in slow but inexorable decline.
